NYA's Annual Vacation
New Year’s Day in Japan is a preparation day to welcome toshigami (年神), the new year’s god. Buddhist temples ring their bells 108 times at midnight to repent all 108 of the bonnō (煩悩), defilements, which people are said to have in their minds.
