Designer Profile: Annie Costello Brown

Name: Annie Costello Brown
Company: Annie Costello Brown
Location: Echo Park, Los Angeles, California
Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you grew up: I was born and raised outside San Francisco in a houseboat hamlet full of artists and freaks. Everyone made their own clothes, jewelry, and even homes, which were cobbled together from WWII era scraps that floated around and sometimes sank!
How did you get into jewelry design: The old Marin City Flea Market was where I learned to hunt for treasures, take them home, take them apart and put them back together in my own way. This would be around when I was nine or ten. From then on, I was always working for jewelry designers as after school jobs or, as I got older, across the ocean in Bali and here in downtown L.A. I struck out on my own in 2006.
Where do you draw your inspiration from: Arts and crafts from the Sixties and Seventies, couture high craft, ancient and ethnic jewelry. Also, Art To Wear and fashions from the New Age Disco Era. I’m also very interested in textiles and traditional handicrafts from all around the globe. I like to play around with hard vs. soft, masculine vs. feminine, ancient vs. contemporary and human vs. alien.
What song best describes your jewelry line: Just Drifting by Psychic TV
Who in history do you imagine wearing your pieces: All the gals who have fun getting dressed and see it as a fun aesthetic game or art form.
